Why it exists.
The beginning
Five years of small-batch work deserves more than a standard release. Flavius Călaj built 5 Anniversary Edition for exactly that milestone: 100 numbered bottles, no more, no restock. The brief was quality materials over volume, and the centerpiece is two types of natural oud in the base. It's Călaj marking a personal anniversary with the kind of focused intent that defines everything the house puts out. The composition reflects that intent. Călaj didn't reach for novelty. He reached for density. Bergamot, lemon, and mint up top signal freshness, but the heart loads quickly into Champaca absolute, Damask rose, Neroli, Ylang-Ylang, clove, and cinnamon. The opposite of minimalist.
The two-oud move is unusual in a release this small, and it's worth slowing down on what that actually does to the base. Camphor wood and Chinese oud sit alongside coffee absolute, cocoa, honey, opoponax, patchouli, and vanilla. That's a base designed to create depth without turning murky. The coffee and cocoa do a lot of the heavy lifting, giving the oud something warm to lean against, almost a roasted sweetness that cushions the more feral edges of the wood. Honey threads through and binds everything into a slightly syrupy register without crossing into cloying.
The evolution
The opening is quick and citrus-forward but not throwaway. Bergamot, lemon, and mint register early, clean and almost bracing, before the warmth starts pushing from underneath. The spices come through clearly: clove first, then cinnamon settling into a slow burn that carries the composition forward. The floral heart doesn't arrive as a sharp transition. It builds inside the spice, Champaca and rose threading through the cinnamon until the whole reads sweet, dense, and slightly golden. Ylang-Ylang adds a creamy edge that smooths the rougher spice notes into something more cohesive. Neroli keeps a thread of brightness running through the middle stretch, preventing the composition from collapsing into pure sweetness. Clove keeps a low smolder going beneath the florals, adding a certain heat that the cooler citrus notes can't provide on their own.
