The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Metaphore WJ arrived in 2020 from Calaj Perfumes. The composition reads less as a fragrance built to please a market and more as an exercise in translating feeling into material, where every choice feels deliberate and considered. Portuguese perfumer Miguel Matos signed the formula, bringing his particular sensibility for independent and niche work to the brief. The name itself carries weight. Metaphore, written with the final e intact, holds onto its original Romance language character rather than defaulting to the English spelling. It's a small typographic decision that signals something about the brand's intentions. The composition lives within the Silver Collection, a curated grouping of releases that treats each fragrance as a statement rather than a product.
What sets Metaphore WJ apart is the unusual pairing of carrot seed with patchouli at the heart, an earthy-sweet combination that brings a vegetal roughness to the composition. The carrot seed reads almost like the smell of crushed greens and damp earth after rainfall, while the patchouli grounds everything with its dark, slightly sweet soil quality. The honey isn't decorative; it's load-bearing. It binds the suede and tobacco together, pulling the leathery notes toward something warmer and more tactile than the usual cold, polished leather accord.
The evolution
The opening is the loudest moment. Thyme and bergamot hit sharp, almost medicinal, an herbal intensity that announces itself immediately on skin. Then the honey arrives and the whole composition tilts toward warmth. The heart opens with carrot seed and patchouli, which reads as damp soil under afternoon sun, vegetal and grounded at the same time. Cedar and jasmine settle in underneath, woody and slightly indolic, giving the composition a lived-in quality that feels organic rather than constructed. As the hours pass, the leathery base takes over. Suede and leather dominate, but they're softened by honey, not sharpened, and the tobacco in the base adds a dry, slightly sweet aromatic layer, something close to the inside of a wooden humidor where cured leaf has been resting for years. Later into the wear, the projection drops to a skin-level hum, but the scent itself doesn't fade.
Cultural impact
Metaphore WJ occupies an unusual position in the niche landscape, a leathery-honeyed composition with enough herbal grit to feel personal rather than purchased. The carrot seed and patchouli pairing gives it an earthy backbone that sets it apart from the usual sweet or smoky leather releases that dominate the category. Honey does heavy structural work here, transforming what could have been a cold suede composition into something warmer and more inviting. Thyme keeps the sweetness honest, adding an astringent edge that prevents the fragrance from drifting toward gourmand territory.
