The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Burberry spent over a century building its reputation on outerwear, trench coats, gabardine, practical elegance. The house waited until 1981 to enter fragrance. When it did, the result was uncompromising. Burberrys for Men arrived as a classic aromatic fougère, blending the cool green herbs and citrus of the opening with the warm leather and civet of the base. It was the house's answer to what a British masculine scent could be: restrained enough to belong in Savile Row, bold enough to hold its own in a nightclub. The name itself said everything, this was Burberry's for Men, the first, the original, the statement.
The note structure is deceptively complex. Six top notes, mint, bergamot, juniper, artemisia, thyme, lavender, create a cold, medicinal opening that reads almost clinical in its precision. Then ten heart notes (patchouli, vetiver, carnation, rose, sandalwood, cedar, geranium, marjoram, jasmine, black pepper) unfold into something warmer and more textured. The real power sits in the base: leather, myrrh, civet, oakmoss, musk, amber. It's the civet that divides opinion, that animalic, skatole-tinged warmth that makes the drydown feel almost intimate. The oakmoss anchors the classical chypre structure, giving it a longevity that outlasts most modern fragrances.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and medicinal, mint, bergamot, and juniper cutting through in the first 30 minutes before the herbal heart takes over. Then patchouli, vetiver, and cedar build that earthy warmth as the carnation and geranium layer in their spiced floral quality. By the time the leather and civet anchor the drydown, the myrrh adds a resinous depth that closes everything out. That cold-medicinal opening is the real test, it either pulls you in or sends you running. The civet and leather combination is what defines the drydown and keeps people coming back. It's animalic and warm, with oakmoss anchoring the classical chypre structure.
Cultural impact
Burberrys for Men has been a classic since 1981, earning high ratings and a dedicated following among fragrance collectors who prize it as a sought-after vintage. The blend of aromatic herbs, animalic civet, and leather makes it a distinctive choice for those who appreciate bold, old-school masculinity in scent.
