The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Brocard, founded in Moscow in 1864 as a luxury soap shop, built its reputation on balanced, narrative-driven scents that reflect a refined but approachable sensibility. Spicy Clementine was conceived in 2018 when perfumer Philippe Paparella-Paris set out to capture the fleeting energy of a Russian spring morning, where the last frost yields to a sudden burst of citrus blossom. Paparella-Paris layered tart clementine against warming ginger and aromatic cardamom, drawing from Brocard's heritage of layering aromatic complexity into coherent, wearable stories.
Paparella-Paris structured Spicy Clementine as a study in contrasts. The opening citrus notes represent the initial frosty clarity of a Russian spring morning, while the heart introduces spice and fruit as the day warms. The drydown, built on cardamom and sandalwood, evokes the comfort of coming indoors after time outside. Rose and violet were chosen specifically to soften the spice without overwhelming it, creating a drydown that feels like a gentle exhale rather than a fade.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through distinct emotional phases. In the first minutes, a sharp citrus opening dominated by clementine and grapefruit commands attention, the lemon and orange lending a clean, almost cologne-like brightness. As the composition settles, blackcurrant joins the heart, bringing a dark, almost tart acidity that interplays with ginger's warmth and jasmine's soft floral breath. Black pepper keeps the heart grounded and dry. The drydown marks a turn toward intimacy as cardamom and sandalwood create a warm, woody embrace while musk, rose, and violet leave a quiet, powdery trail.
Cultural impact
Since its 2018 debut, Spicy Clementine has become a quiet favorite among collectors who appreciate its bright citrus‑spice contrast, often cited alongside Brocard’s limited‑edition releases as a study in balanced exuberance. Its influence extended to niche forums where enthusiasts discuss its balance, and it inspired limited‑edition collaborations that echo its citrus‑spice harmony.
