The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nude arrived in 1991, a collaboration between Bill Blass and Sophia Grojsman, the perfumer behind some of the most intimate fragrances of the late 20th century. The composition opens with aldehydes that bring an immediate brightness, a sharp floral lift that quickly pivots as galbanum and rosemary enter the picture, pulling the scent toward green and herbal territory. The heart reveals Narcissus, rose, and ylang-ylang, creating a warm, waxy floral character that feels soft and enveloping. As the fragrance develops, powdery iris emerges and musk becomes dominant, settling into a warm skin-close intimacy that lingers gently throughout the day.
Structurally, the aldehydes function as a bridge rather than a star. Galbanum and rosemary cut through the aldehydic lift immediately, pulling it toward green and herbal territory. The heart of Narcissus, rose, and ylang-ylang is warm and slightly waxy, like white flowers left in a closed room. By the time the drydown arrives, the aldehydic character has dissolved entirely into powder and musk, a full circle from cold brightness to warm skin-close intimacy. The transition feels intentional, each phase responding to what came before.
The evolution
The opening is the most demanding moment. Aldehydes hit sharp, with a bright, almost metallic quality that some find challenging. The galbanum and rosemary arrive quickly, pulling the composition toward green and herbal. Rosemary especially lingers longer than expected, keeping the top phase herbal rather than purely aldehydic. The heart transitions over the first hour: Narcissus adds a waxy, slightly sweet floral character while rose and jasmine fill out the body. By hour two, the powdery iris emerges and the musk becomes dominant. The drydown is where Nude earns its name, warm, skin-close, intimate. Vetiver and sandalwood provide the structure, but the star is the musk-iris combination that stays close and lingers for hours. The scent evolves gracefully from its initial sharpness to a quiet, persistent presence.
Cultural impact
Nude belongs to the aldehydic floral tradition that shaped American perfumery in the late 20th century. The fragrance rewards close encounters rather than announcing itself across a room, offering an intimate experience that invites discovery. For wearers who appreciate vintage aesthetics and powdery florals, Nude offers a distinctive alternative to contemporary offerings. The composition speaks to those who value subtlety and nuance over bold projection.
