The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aim High is part of Benetton's United Dreams collection, a series built around the idea that ambition wears many faces. This particular entry was designed as a masculine aromatic built on citrus and fougère contrast, bright on top, earthy underneath. The composition opens with a burst of grapefruit, lemon, and bitter orange, three citruses that set an immediate, almost sharp tone. Beneath that bright surface, the base anchors the whole thing with moss, patchouli, vetiver, and amber, pulling the scent into darker, damper territory. That vertical tension between the sparkling citrus and the dense, earthy base is what gives the fragrance its character and keeps it from feeling one-dimensional.
The interesting tension here lives between the top and base. Three citruses, grapefruit, bitter orange, and Sicilian lemon, establish a sharp, almost bracing opening that would normally belong in a summer cologne. But the base pulls the whole thing downward into something closer to a forest floor: moss, patchouli, vetiver, amber. That vertical contrast is what gives the composition its structure. There's almost a weight problem here, and the perfumer seems to have leaned into it rather than resolving it.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost aggressively clean. Grapefruit leads, Sicilian lemon cuts behind it, and bitter orange rounds the whole top into something that reads as shower-fresh. Around the twenty-minute mark, mint arrives with a cool sharpness that most citrus openings skip. Then sage and geranium settle in, giving the heart a green, slightly herbal character that feels less sport and more trail. The mint acts as a bridge between the bright top and the herbal heart, cooling the transition so neither phase overwhelms the other. By the two-hour mark, the citrus is a memory. Moss and patchouli take over, bringing a damp, earthy weight. Vetiver adds the dry, almost smoky thread that keeps it from going muddy. The sage lingers longer than expected, holding onto its green character even as the base takes over.
Cultural impact
Aim High sits in Benetton's United Dreams collection, a line that includes several entries each with its own character. The composition reads as a straightforward aromatic fougère, and there's something appealing about that directness. The scent moves through its phases without trying to be clever about it, grapefruit and mint up top, sage and geranium in the heart, moss and patchouli holding down the base. It's the kind of fragrance that feels built for actual wearing rather than shelf decoration.
