The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Verveine du Sud arrived in 2019, composed by Mathieu Nardin for Bastide. The brand framed its inspiration in the fresh water running down from Mount Saint Victoire into the basin and pool of the co-founder's bastide, then out into the garden where verbena grows. That verbena gets steeped for tea on summer nights after dinner, and the scent aims to capture that moment: invigorating herbs, fresh citrus, and the green clarity of verbena.
What makes this composition worth noticing is the way it treats lemon verbena as the centerpiece of the heart. Here it anchors the herbal character, flanked by mint and a soft blush of peony. Grapefruit and Italian lemon bring the snap, peppermint adds a cold tingle, and the base settles into white musk, blond woods, and amber. It's a citrus aromatic built with herbal depth, balancing fresh brightness with a warm, softly textured drydown.
The evolution
The opening arrives brisk and cold. Grapefruit and Italian lemon cut sharp, with peppermint throwing a clean, mentholated edge across the top, like a glass of iced water in a hot room. That initial brightness is where this scent lives most vividly, so give it a few minutes before judging it. As the citrus softens, verbena and mint settle into the center with peony's powdery floral warmth, and the composition starts to feel less like fruit and more like crushed green leaves over cool stone. The final act is quiet and domestic. White musk softens everything into clean skin, blond woods add a pale dry grain, and amber brings a low, honeyed warmth without tipping into heaviness. What remains at the end is a warm, barely-there musky amber, the kind of trace that lingers on a collar after the verbena has long since faded.
Cultural impact
Verveine du Sud draws on a vivid sense of place, with verbena, citrus, mint, and cool green notes that make its identity immediately legible. Wearing it feels less like projecting confidence and more like correcting the temperature of a room you have just walked into. The seasonal appeal skews heavily toward warm weather, but the musky base keeps it from disappearing once the heat breaks. Its appeal lies in the contrast it offers: sharp citrus and cold herbs at first, then softened greenery, pale woods, and a restrained amber warmth.
The House
Bastide Aix en ProvenceBastide is a French fragrance and lifestyle brand rooted in the sun-drenched city of Aix-en-Provence. The company creates perfumes, home fragrances, body care and hand products that draw from the sensory landscape of southern France. Its collections capture Provençal botanicals like lavender, neroli, orange blossom and fig in Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette concentrations. The brand operates with a team of in-house artisans referred to as Beautisans, who work with formulations emphasizing plant-derived ingredients and reportedly clean beauty standards. Frédéric Fekkai, a prominent figure in the beauty industry, and Shirin von Wulffen serve as co-founders of the current iteration of the company. The brand's Instagram presence frames its offerings as daily rituals, describing its collections as originating from the heart of Aix to the consumer's personal routine.
