The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ambre Maquis arrived in 2016 from Mathieu Nardin, with a composition built around the tension between brightness and weight. Tangerine and elemi resin create an airy first impression, while rose and labdanum bring texture and intimacy to the middle. The base settles into amber, patchouli, and sandalwood, giving the fragrance an earthy, balsamic character rather than a simple citrus finish. As the opening softens, the materials settle into a layered impression: citrus remains bright, resin adds clarity, and the woody base gives the scent a warm, grounded depth.
The composition moves through distinct textures and intensities. Tangerine supplies a familiar flash of brightness, while elemi resin brings a cool, transparent edge. Labdanum and rose soften that opening without making it sweet in a predictable way. Their floral and slightly leathery facets give the middle a nuanced character. Then amber, patchouli, and sandalwood take over, turning the composition warmer, darker, and more grounded. The result feels less like a citrus scent with a woody base and more like a continuous shift from light to skin.
The evolution
The opening begins with the clean lift of tangerine and elemi resin, bright enough to catch attention without turning fizzy. As those notes recede, rose and labdanum add a textured middle: floral, slightly leathery, and quietly sensual. Patchouli then gives the scent its earthy weight, while amber and sandalwood create a warm base that feels closer to skin than air. As the bright opening softens, the composition becomes more resinous and woody, with patchouli adding depth and amber rounding the drydown. The result is intimate and polished, with a soft amber trail.
Cultural impact
Ambre Maquis is presented through a warm, woody amber character and a composition designed to move from brightness to depth. Tangerine and elemi resin establish a lively opening, rose and labdanum introduce texture, and patchouli, amber, and sandalwood create an earthy base. Its appeal comes from this contrast: citrus brightness held within a richer woody structure, with fragrance becoming part of the atmosphere around the wearer.
