The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Euan McCall composed Where We Used To Live for Azman in 2022, building on the brand's belief that scent maps memory. The concept centered on a place once inhabited, now out of reach. McCall brought a focused sensibility to the project, developing the fragrance with particular attention to how its elements would resonate over time. Where many perfumers might have reached for bold statements, this work favored depth and continuity, creating something that rewards sustained attention rather than immediate impact. The result feels considered rather than calculated, each layer present for a reason.
The heart of this fragrance is osmanthus absolute, a material prized for its apricot-like sweetness. Rare and expensive, it anchors the floral composition, giving rose, jasmine, and orange blossom something substantial to build upon rather than float through. Heliotrope introduces its characteristic almond-powder quality, making the florals feel worn-in rather than fresh-cut. The Assam oud? Not the star, the spine. Earthy and faintly animalic, it keeps the sweetness from becoming decorative.
The evolution
The opening arrives full-throttle, blackcurrant bud absolute hits green and sharp, punching through the magnolia and honeysuckle like someone just opened a window in an old house. Thirty seconds in, the florals overwhelm. It is potpourri. It is potpourri with ambition. The heliotrope reads rubbery at first, a slightly off note that resolves itself as the vanilla begins to breathe. The Assam oud emerges as the composition develops, providing structure and grounding the sweetness. The heart develops steadily, the florals maintaining their presence before gradually receding. The drydown makes itself known: musky vetiver, patchouli with a faint chocolate-wood quality, and a lingering trace of heliotrope that clings to fabric long after the initial application. Spray a scarf. Forget you sprayed it. Find it three days later.
Cultural impact
Where We Used To Live represents an intriguing niche release that treats memory as raw material rather than decorative theme. ÇaFleureBon recognized it as one of 2022's more compelling niche releases. The composition appeals to collectors who want emotional resonance without sacrificing complexity: osmanthus and Assam oud create depth that transcends simple categorization, offering sweetness earned through layered materials rather than volume. The work sits alongside other Azman fragrances that approach memory with similar seriousness.
