The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Atelier Segall & Barutti, founded in 1993, built its reputation on narrative-driven compositions that treat each fragrance as a story rather than a formula. For Mimosa & Tonka, perfumer Tzivia Segall began with an apparent contradiction: a name that suggests softness, sweetness, and comfort, paired with a structure that refuses to be merely pleasant. The goal was to honor the cozy connotations of Mimosa and Tonka while introducing an unexpected tension through material choices that feel both familiar and slightly unresolved.
The pairing of citrus with spice and warm woods reflects a deliberate attempt to balance opposites. Mandarin Orange and White Musk open with clarity; Tonka Bean, Black Pepper, and Cinnamon introduce controlled warmth; Cedarwood and Vetiver ground the composition in earthiness. The result is a fragrance that moves through multiple registers, never settling into a single mood. Tzivia Segall's approach treats each note as a narrative element, building an arc rather than a static impression.
The evolution
The scent begins with Mandarin Orange and White Musk, establishing immediate brightness and cleanliness. As the fragrance develops, the Mandarin Orange remains, joined now by Orange, while Tonka Bean introduces warmth. The heart introduces Black Pepper and Cinnamon, spices that create a counterpoint to the citrus sweetness. Neroli adds a floral dimension that keeps the warmth from becoming heavy. The drydown brings Cedarwood and Vetiver, shifting the character toward dry woodiness. Musk and Amber linger in the base, creating a soft, enveloping finish that rewards patience.
Cultural impact
Mimosa & Tonka stands apart from the house's more widely discussed releases, Honey Neroli & Myrrh earned more early attention, and Rose Indian drew wider coverage in 2016. But among those who encountered this one, the reaction is consistent: the citrus-spice arc surprises people who expected something softer from the name. It occupies a specific space in the Brazilian niche landscape, warm and woody without being heavy, sweet without being safe, complex without being difficult.
