The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nabati Oud arrived in 2025 as a continuation of Astrophil & Stella's narrative tradition. The house has built its reputation on the idea that scent should capture an emotion difficult to name, and Christian Provenzano approached this brief with a clear intent: build something that earns its oud through contrast. The opening was designed to surprise, warm, rum-forward, almost edible, before the composition settles into the leather and resin that Western audiences associate with quality oud. The name Nabati echoes the house's earlier Nabati (2021), extending that lineage into deeper, more resinous territory. Where the original was green and aromatic, this version layers complexity on complexity, using davana and aquatic notes to create a cool counterpoint to the heat.
The composition stands out for what it does with ambrette and iris. Ambrette, the musk from ambrette seed, brings a warm, almost animalic quality that bridges the opening to the heart without resorting to actual animalics. Iris adds powdery violet elegance that softens the entire structure. Together they create a counterintuitive effect: warm and intimate, yet refined. That's the unusual move here. Most oud-leather fragrances lean hard into darkness. This one keeps a light on.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. Rum and saffron arrive first, that rich, sweet alcohol note with saffron's unmistakable metallic edge. Cardamom and star anise layer in fast, creating warmth that borders on medicinal, almost absinthe-like. Bergamot lingers in the background, stopping things from going too heavy too soon. Ambrette adds a musky warmth that bridges the top notes to what comes next. Thirty minutes in, the heart opens. Oud and leather take over. The oud is smooth, resinous, not the barnyard variety, but the kind that Western niche audiences expect from high-end perfumery. Leather follows, clean and expensive, almost buttery. Davana brings an aromatic, slightly sweet quality that adds complexity. The aquatic notes arrive as a surprise, not marine or ozonic, but a cool, wet counterpoint to the warm spice, lifting the heavier materials and keeping the heart from becoming too dense. Iris and Turkish rose arrive to soften. Iris adds powdery violet elegance.
Cultural impact
Nabati Oud stands apart in the oud-leather-warm spice category for its opening. The rum-forward start is unusual, most fragrances in this genre begin with incense or smoke. The davana adds an aromatic quality that Western audiences have grown to appreciate in high-end oud compositions. Strong sillage means it draws attention without overwhelming. For someone who wants oud that breathes and evolves rather than simply projecting, this is worth exploring.
