The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Canvas Perfume Oil emerged from And Other Stories' desire to translate the tactile feeling of a blank canvas into scent. In 2016, perfumer Jerome Epinette was tasked with capturing that moment of pristine potential, the crisp snap of citrus and clean linen ready for a first brushstroke. The name references the fabric beneath un-stretched canvas, the raw material waiting for intention. Epinette built the scent around a progression that mirrors making: beginning with a bright, energizing spark, moving into warm exploration, and ending in something that has become inseparable from the maker.
The note structure reflects a philosophy of restraint and intimacy. Bergamot and lime provide an opening clarity that feels essential rather than decorative. Peach and ginger offer warmth without sweetness, a careful balance that keeps the heart from overwhelming. The ambroxan, musk, and sandalwood base is designed to become part of the wearer rather than announce itself. The scent invites closeness rather than broadcast, making it ideal for someone who wants fragrance to be a private detail rather than a public statement.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with bergamot and lime, a tart citrus clarity that hits immediately and sets an energizing tone. This is the spark before contact, the blankness before intent. Within minutes, peach enters as a soft, round counterpoint, while ginger adds warmth beneath the surface. The heart is where the work happens, where initial energy deepens into something more considered. As the drydown arrives, ambroxan shifts the character from bright to clear, and musk blends with sandalwood to create a finish that reads as skin rather than perfume. The progression mirrors the creative act itself: spark, exploration, revelation.
Cultural impact
Since its 2016 debut, Canvas has become a quiet favorite among fans of understated, studio‑inspired scents. Wearers often cite its ability to sit close to the skin without overwhelming, making it a go‑to for layered fragrance wardrobes. Its clean‑musky profile positions it alongside other And Other Stories oils that champion subtle storytelling over bold statements.
