The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Homme Strong arrived in 2021 as the bolder companion to Alan Bray's expanding L'Homme line. By that point the house had built a catalogue of scents, and the masculine flank of that catalogue was already crowded with entries like L'Homme Legend, L'Homme Night, and L'Homme Atlantic. Strong was conceived to occupy a sharper, more herbaceous register than its siblings. The fragrance reads as an aromatic citrus composition cut from a tighter weave, something that pushes the herbal elements to the foreground rather than letting them hide beneath the fruit. The top opens with bergamot, lavender, and lemon, a bright and breezy accord that announces itself without shouting.
The composition leans on a trio of citrus and aromatic notes up top, bergamot, lavender, and lemon. What's distinctive here is how Alan Bray stacks them against an unexpected heart: red apple alongside geranium and sage. That apple note does real work. It brightens the herbal elements and prevents the lavender from tipping into old-school barbershop territory. The geranium contributes a subtle rosy facet that warms the composition without pushing it into overtly floral territory, and the sage brings a herbaceous sharpness that complements the lavender's cooler, more herbal side.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are the loudest L'Homme Strong will ever be. Bergamot and lemon crack open sharp and clean, almost effervescent, with the apple slicing through almost immediately, juicy and tart at once. Lavender grounds it before it floats away. The citrus trio sparkles with a brightness that feels almost carbonated, and the apple note cuts through that sparkle with its own crisp sweetness, giving the opening a layered quality where no single element dominates. By the one-hour mark, the citrus has mostly stepped back and the heart takes over. Sage arrives with a green, slightly camphorated edge, and the geranium begins to show its quiet warmth, introducing a subtle rosy facet that gives the heart a soft, almost velvety character.
Cultural impact
L'Homme Strong sits comfortably within Alan Bray's L'Homme family, an extension of a line that explores masculine fragrance through accessible aromatic compositions. Wearers tend to be the kind of people who want something clean and intentional, a scent that reads as well-considered without demanding attention. The fragrance carries a quiet confidence that suits a range of settings, from a morning meeting to a casual dinner. Its combination of citrus brightness, herbal sharpness, and a woody base gives it versatility without sacrificing character.
