The beginning
Dominique Monlun built Gentleman Lover for the man who doesn't need to announce himself, the one whose presence lands before he opens his mouth. Released in 2018 through Adopt Parfums, the composition leans on a classical iris heart but refuses to behave like a traditional gentleman. Pink pepper, cardamom, and nutmeg crack through the top like a conversation that's more interesting than expected. The spice trio doesn't shout so much as it leans in close, pulling you toward the iris before the powder even settles. Once it does, the suede-like softness of the orris meets a woody cradle of cedar and sandalwood that gives the whole composition a tailored weight without ever feeling stiff. Gentleman Lover wears like something considered, never performative.
What makes this composition interesting is the friction between the powder and the heat. Iris is one of perfumery's most polite materials, all cool elegance and suede-soft texture. Wrapping it in pink pepper, cardamom, and nutmeg gives it nerve.
