    Dominique Monlun

Dominique Monlun entered the fragrance world in the early 1980s, armed with a background in graphic design and a lifelong fascination with scent as a form of personal expression. After apprenticeships at several Parisian houses, he launched Adopt in 1986, a brand built around accessibility and playful reinvention. The debut line introduced L'eau Virile, a crisp blend of bergamot, laurels and lemon that quickly earned a place on French shelves. More than forty years ago he fought to preserve the Osmothèque’s archive, arguing that shared heritage protects future creativity. Over the past four decades Monlun has guided Adopt through multiple reformulations, always keeping the label’s democratic spirit alive. His work reflects a belief that perfume should be both affordable and unforgettable, a conviction that continues to shape his daily laboratory experiments.

    How Dominique composes

Monlun favors a clear structure: a bright opening, a modest heart, and a lingering base that rewards patience. Citrus, green herbs and aromatic woods dominate his openings, while floral whispers often appear in the middle, never overpowering. He relies on natural absolutes such as bergamot, lavender and cedar, complemented by modern synthetics that add longevity without sacrificing purity. His technique includes layering thin accords, allowing each note to breathe before the next is introduced. The result feels crisp, approachable, and subtly complex.

    Philosophy

    What drives Dominique

Monlun treats each bottle as a conversation between memory and the present moment. He starts with a single emotional trigger—a sunrise over the Rhône, a childhood game of hide and seek—and translates it into a palette of raw materials. Rather than chasing trends, he asks what scent would make a passerby pause on a busy boulevard. Sustainability guides his ingredient choices; he prefers responsibly sourced citrus and plant extracts that respect the ecosystems they come from. The driving force behind his creations is the desire to make scent a democratic language, spoken by anyone who reaches for a spray.
