The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aridal takes its name from a meteorite discovered scattered across the Saharan sands. That celestial origin became the creative engine for Xerjoff's Shooting Stars collection, a series built around objects that fall from the sky. The brief was simple and ambitious: translate the moment of impact into scent. Cold stone meeting hot skin. Mineral freshness colliding with warmth. The meteorite fragment embedded in the case makes the connection literal.
The real distinction lies in the Italian orris. This material is difficult to work with, but it delivers something the spice notes can't: a cool counterpoint that pulls the composition away from warmth and toward powdery refinement. Cashmere wood wraps the heart in something soft and enveloping. Jasmine appears here too, but quietly, more whisper than statement. The dry woods and papyrus at the base carry the desert forward, a dusty papery quality that honors the meteorite's origin.
The evolution
The opening announces itself in soft spice, nutmeg and pink pepper specks that feel distinguishable yet graceful. Elemi and cypress provide an aromatic coolness underneath, a mineral quality that reads almost ozonic. The first hour is the warmest phase, with the pink pepper burning off and the orris beginning to assert itself. As the afternoon wears on, the cashmere wood and jasmine take over, creating a powdery softness that settles close to the skin. The dry woods emerge in the final act, with papyrus adding a dusty, dreamlike quality. Benzoin sweetens the base without making it edible. By evening, what's left is warm and quiet, the kind of presence that doesn't need to announce itself.
Cultural impact
The meteorite fragment embedded in the case is a physical reminder of the fragrance's origin story. Xerjoff's approach treats each scent as a sculptural object, existing beyond what is expected of luxury. Launched in 2022, the Shooting Stars collection draws inspiration from celestial phenomena, with Aridal specifically named after a meteorite discovered in the Western Sahara desert. The limited edition approach and distinctive packaging reinforce its collector's appeal.
