The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Forest was one of three place-scented releases that Wales Perfumery brought to market in 2022, alongside Country and Coast. The brand operates from a converted barn in the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, a setting that runs through every brief the house writes. Forest maps the dense, moss-carpeted woodlands that thread through the valleys of Monmouthshire, where oak and fir have stood long enough to become geography. The fragrance wears a Welsh name, Coedwig, alongside its English one, doubling the sense that this scent begins in a very specific patch of ground. It pulls directly from the canopy overhead, the damp loam beneath, the spice-sweet resin bleeding from wounded bark.
What makes Forest distinctive isn't the woody theme alone. It's the way oak and moss sit at the top of the structure, opening the composition on cold forest floor rather than warm amber, which inverts the usual arc of a woody fragrance. Fir needle and saffron arrive soon after as a green-and-spicy counterpunch, the coniferous snap of fir playing off the leathery warmth of saffron. The base settles into patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood, and cedar, building a firm grounding layer that holds the composition together for hours.
The evolution
The opening is unexpected for a woody scent. Apple, moss, and oak arrive cool and slightly damp, almost mineral. There's a crispness to the first ten minutes that reads like cold air over wet bark rather than fruit or greenery. By twenty minutes the fir needle pushes through, green and clean, followed by saffron warming the whole structure. The heart phase runs from roughly thirty minutes to three hours, dominated by fir and saffron with a steady earthy undertow pulling from the oak above. Around hour three the drydown begins, and the base notes take over completely. Patchouli, cedar, sandalwood, and vetiver fuse into a dense, slightly sweet wood that sits close to skin, each ingredient lending its own grain to the final picture.
Cultural impact
Forest arrived as part of Wales Perfumery's 2022 launch alongside Country and Coast, situating the house's work firmly in Welsh landscape. The scent reads as a grounding, quiet composition, worn close to the body and built around depth rather than flash. Its moderate sillage means it tends to stay intimate, offering a personal layer of atmosphere rather than broadcasting across a room. The fragrance appeals to those drawn to woody profiles but wary of sweetness or the louder projections found in many contemporary niche releases.
