The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wales Perfumery, founded in 2020 in the Wye Valley, crafts vegan fragrances inspired by British landscapes with occasional Mediterranean influence. Cornovii extends this place-conscious philosophy to the Cornish coast, named for the ancient Celtic tribe who maintained trade routes spanning coastal Britain and the Mediterranean. Louise Smith designed the fragrance to honor that crossroads of cultures, using ingredients that evoke both Atlantic shores and Mediterranean warmth.
The use of mineral water in the opening is unusual and deliberate. It provides an aquatic quality without traditional aquatic ingredients, reflecting the coastal environment that inspired the fragrance. Bay leaf and olive absolute in the heart connect to the Mediterranean strand of Wales Perfumery's identity, honoring the trade routes the Cornovii maintained. Frankincense in the drydown functions as both a cultural reference and an olfactory anchor, grounding the fragrance in something ancient and contemplative.
The evolution
The journey begins with bergamot, honey pomelo, lemon, and mineral water creating a bright, aquatic opening that suggests sea spray and coastal air. As the top notes recede, bay leaf introduces an aromatic green complexity while gold accord adds unexpected metallic warmth. Mineral notes persist to maintain that coastal grounding while olive absolute emerges with its bitter, herbaceous Mediterranean character. The fragrance resolves into frankincense, a resinous note that echoes the ancient trade routes the Cornovii tribe once navigated, bringing sacred depth to an otherwise contemporary structure.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 debut, Cornovii has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts for its bright citrus‑mineral blend that nods to ancient Cornish trade routes, positioning it as a modern tribute to Celtic maritime heritage. The scent’s reference to historic seafaring commerce has inspired blog posts and social media discussions that explore how regional identity can be expressed through contemporary perfumery, reinforcing a sense of place in a global market.
