The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Reve d'Encens is the Collection Extraordinaire's answer to incense done the Van Cleef & Arpels way. The name translates as 'dream of incense', but not quite in the way you'd expect. Where most incense compositions announce themselves with smoke and presence, this one whispers. The perfumer behind this 2018 creation found a way to make the warmth feel considered rather than aggressive, precious rather than heavy. It's the difference between a gemstone held up to the light and one set into a piece you actually wear. This is incense as jewelry, subtle, wearable, made to be lived with rather than announced.
The interplay between saffron and frankincense is what makes Reve d'Encens unusual. Most incense-forward compositions lean entirely warm, almost aggressive in their smoky character. Here, saffron's metallic coolness keeps the frankincense from tipping into heaviness. The rose absolute doesn't sweeten the smoke, it elevates it, adding a floral elegance that reads as refined rather than round. The result is a woody-oriental that wears clean and composed. A western take on Oriental perfumery, one that understands restraint is its own kind of luxury.
The evolution
The opening announces itself in cold light, saffron's metallic spice is sharp, almost astringent, like red threads pulled taut. There's no warm-up period. It arrives fully formed. Within minutes, the frankincense begins to soften the edges, smoke rising through the spice, but it never overwhelms. The rose absolute appears quietly, threading through the incense rather than sitting on top of it. By the second hour, the composition has settled into its most interesting phase: warm, resinous, the smoke and the floral holding equal weight in a kind of suspended balance. The drydown is where sandalwood earns its place, creamy, skin-warm, intimate. White musk keeps it close rather than projecting. Eight to ten hours on most skin. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, faint and elegant, the ghost of something precious.
Cultural impact
Reve d'Encens occupies a distinctive corner within the Van Cleef & Arpels lineup, a woody-oriental that leans into warmth without the aggressive smoke of heavier incense compositions. The Collection Extraordinaire positions it as a considered, refined alternative to the oud-forward fragrances that dominate the category at comparable price points.
