The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Land of Warriors emerged in 2014 as The Vagabond Prince's second fragrance, developed with perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. The concept centered on leather, and Duchaufour approached it with his characteristic precision, building a composition where leather functions as the structural backbone rather than a single dominant note. The fragrance moves through multiple phases, with the leather presence threading through the opening and into the drydown. Duchaufour's handling treats the leather material with nuance, avoiding the straightforward polished leather convention in favor of something with more complexity and texture.
The opening surprises with green pomegranate and rhubarb, creating a tart, juicy brightness that reads as fresh and acidic. Bergamot and mandarin add a citrus dimension that complements the green notes. Oregano and angelica seed introduce an herbal bitterness that grounds the composition and prevents the opening from feeling too bright. The herbal quality adds an interesting dimension that keeps the overall impression from becoming purely fruity. This green, tart quality carries through the opening phase before the leather note begins to make its presence felt.
The evolution
The opening lands sharp and tart, green pomegranate, rhubarb, a flash of bergamot and mandarin. Oregano threads through with an herbal bitterness that keeps everything grounded. Thirty minutes in, the leather arrives. The kind that feels worn, almost damp, like a jacket that's been through some weather. Juniper and hawthorn give it an almost coniferous lift, but the leather dominates. By hour two, the heart settles into something richer. Castoreum and ambergris arrive quietly, adding warmth without sweetness. Tobacco leaf and smoky styrax take over the base, with oakmoss and patchouli providing the earthy anchor. The drydown is intimate, close to the skin, animalic without being aggressive, resinous and dark. The castoreum and tobacco linger longest, developing into a warm, slightly animalic trail that settles close to the skin as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
Land of Warriors arrived in 2014, arriving at a moment when masculine perfumery leaned heavily on certain established conventions. It offered something with texture, combining green and tart notes with animalic elements and a substantial leather presence. The fragrance found an audience among those looking for something with more character than mainstream masculine offerings provided. It represented the kind of work a dedicated niche house could produce when operating with a clear point of view, delivering a composition that mainstream brands typically avoid. The fragrance remains in production.
