The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Safran Lumière belongs to The Merchant of Venice's Murano Art collection. Launched in 2026 and composed by Alessandro Olmo, it takes saffron as its axis, the spice that gives the fragrance both its name and its gravitational pull. The saffron here is not a background hum but the lead voice, present from the first spray through the final hours on skin. Olmo treats the spice as a structural material, building around it rather than accenting with it. The composition reads as an exploration of saffron's range, from its bright, almost plasticky warmth in the opening to the leathery, slightly animalic facets that emerge as the base notes settle.
What makes Safran Lumière interesting is the saffron-strawberry pairing at the top. Strawberry is a less obvious choice for a saffron-led fragrance, and it shifts the entire trajectory of the scent from the first five minutes. The fruit reads as ripe, almost jammy, brightening the spice with a rounded sweetness. The iris and sandalwood at the heart keep things anchored, the iris adding a cool, powdery dimension while the sandalwood provides a creamy, woody foundation that steadies the more volatile top notes. Cypriol adds an earthier, nagarmotha-like smokiness that the frankincense lifts.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are bright and almost gourmand, saffron and strawberry in conversation, with cardamom providing a green coolness underneath. There's a fruit-jam quality that feels deliberately generous, not shy. The saffron here is extroverted, almost showy, its leathery warmth amplified by the strawberry's ripe sweetness rather than softened by it. Around the thirty-minute mark, the iris arrives and the composition shifts register. The strawberry sweetness recedes, the cypriol deepens into something smoky and root-like, and the sandalwood settles in. What felt like a warm-spice opening becomes a cooler, more powdery iris composition, with frankincense adding a clean resin lift that keeps the heavier notes from sinking too low.
Cultural impact
Safran Lumière sits within The Merchant of Venice's Murano Art collection as a warmer, more gourmand-leaning composition. Its strawberry pairing at the top and iris pivot at the heart distinguish it from more austere saffron-led fragrances, and the Ambroxan-Bourbon vanilla drydown gives it a skin-warm finish that rewards close wearing. The fragrance operates in the space between spice composition and soft amber, offering saffron's complexity without the heavier, more resinous framing that often accompanies it.
