The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Renaissance is part of The Merchant of Venice's Murano Exclusive collection, a line inspired by the artistic heritage of the Venetian lagoon. The fragrance draws from Renaissance portraits, those painted studies of beauty where harmony, symmetry, and balance define the subject. Calice Becker, one of contemporary perfumery's most respected noses, translated that visual language into scent. The result isn't a period piece. It's a manifesto of timeless elegance, celebrating the rediscovery of the individual through a composition that feels both classical and current. Like the aura of a painting, Renaissance evokes a velvet twilight, where sparks of saffron illuminate the nobility of leather, and patchouli shapes an opulence instantly understood.
What makes this composition interesting is its deliberate duality. The top is almost architectural, galbanum's green sharpness cut by orange blossom absolute and the metallic glow of saffron. Then the heart shifts register entirely. Iris brings powder and root, a cool, almost suede-like pallor that reads as both refined and remote. Akigalawood, that proprietary woody-amber material, adds a mineral warmth that bridges earth and skin, its dusty facets catching the light from the brighter notes above.
The evolution
The first minutes are sharp and bright. Galbanum's green bite is almost vegetal, raw and uncompromising, softened slightly by saffron's golden thread. Orange blossom absolute adds a white floral lift that keeps the opening from feeling austere, a clean solar quality that lets the green breathe rather than choke. As the composition settles, the green recedes and iris takes over, powdery and cool, with that distinctive rooty earthiness that makes iris so compelling. There's a violet-coldness to it, a thing of old apothecary jars and velvet-lined drawers. Akigalawood and Indonesian patchouli settle into the composition like ink soaking into parchment, adding depth without weight, their darkness seeping into the iris rather than smothering it.
Cultural impact
Renaissance joins The Merchant of Venice's Murano Exclusive collection, a line that references the artistic heritage of the Venetian lagoon through both scent and presentation. The fragrance speaks to a wearer who navigates history and sensuality with ease, someone drawn to composed, regal fragrances rather than trend-driven releases. There's a sense of portraiture in the way it wears, a deliberate, painterly quality that rewards attention over time. It feels less like a scent for the moment and more like a piece meant to be lived with, the way one lives with a favorite painting.
