The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Southern Water was born in 2024 from Mahsam Raza's work as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, a collection dedicated to translating storied compositions into modern, accessible formulations. Southern Water is Raza's interpretation of Goutal's classic Eau Du Sud, that particular French summer-in-a-bottle composition that earned its reputation through years of wear and a recognizable signature. Raza rebuilt the blueprint from the ground up: bergamot and lime open the composition with their bright, sun-warmed citrus, then galbanum takes over with its sharp, almost bitter green sting.
What makes this composition interesting isn't any single note. It's the tension between galbanum and basil. Galbanum is one of perfumery's sharpest greens, almost resinous, almost metallic, the kind of material that can read as bitter if you let it dominate. Basil and peppermint arrive as a softening counterweight, adding sweetness and coolness without dulling that green edge. Then verbena bridges back to the citrus opening, tying the herbal heart to the bergamot-lime sparkle above. The result is a composition where every layer pulls in a different direction, and the whole thing only works because the proportions hold. Too much galbanum and it's aggressive. Too much basil and it turns culinary.
The evolution
The opening belongs to bergamot and lime, bright and almost cheerful, like sunlight catching the surface of moving water. Then galbanum walks in uninvited and the whole composition tilts greener, sharper, cooler, the citrus receding just enough to let that distinctive bitter-green character take the lead. Basil arrives alongside peppermint in the heart, and there's a moment where the composition reads almost like a chilled herbal drink, cooling, slightly sweet, undeniably fresh, the kind of combination that makes you think of crushed stems and garden clippings on a hot afternoon. Verbena threads through everything, keeping the citrus alive while the herbs do their work, lending a lemon-zest brightness that prevents the green from ever becoming too austere.
Cultural impact
Southern Water occupies a specific corner of the fragrance world, the green citrus aromatic territory where sharp herbal notes and bright citrus meet a mossy, earthy base. The galbanum is the polarizing element: people either love that sharp, bitter green crack or they find it too aggressive. There's no middle ground, and that's part of the appeal. The composition reads as understated confidence, a quieter kind of statement than the louder, sweeter profiles that dominate a lot of mainstream fragrance discourse.
