The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shimmering Dunes comes from the desk of Mahsam Raza, the nose behind the composition, and it sits squarely in the oriental-woody category with one foot planted in gourmand sweetness and the other in resinous depth. The opening is almost edible, a bright, sugary burst of vanilla and caramel laced with fruit, and that brightness sets up the slow gravity pull of what follows. Once the heart settles in, frankincense and styrax take over, dragging the composition toward smoke and something faintly animalic, while leather and oud build a base that grounds everything without smothering the sweetness. It's a composition that earns its weight, structured enough to reward attention but smooth enough to wear without effort.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the way it refuses to settle into one lane. Shimmering Dunes threads gourmand and smoky territory at once, letting vanilla and caramel sit alongside frankincense and styrax from the heart onward. The saffron and cinnamon in the opening read as clearly stated. Frankincense and styrax take over, adding smoke and something faintly animalic. The leather and oud in the base ground everything without dragging it into darkness. It's a deliberate balancing act, and the result reads as confident rather than crowded.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost edible. Fruity sweetness wrapped in vanilla, with saffron and cinnamon warming the edges. It reads bright, almost like a spiced pastry cooling on a counter. That sugar-laced opening doesn't last long, maybe twenty minutes, before the middle phase starts pulling the composition somewhere deeper. The heart is where the real architecture shows: rose and ylang-ylang push through, but they're not the stars. Frankincense, styrax, and leather take over, adding smoke and something faintly animalic. The caramel sticks around, but it's no longer a dessert note. It's closer to burnt sugar, the edge of something caramelized in a pan. Patchouli anchors the transition, keeping the florals from floating away. By the three-hour mark, the composition has gone fully resinous. Amber, labdanum, and sandalwood form a warm, low hum.
Cultural impact
Shimmering Dunes participates in the warmer end of the oriental spectrum, a territory where saffron, frankincense, oud, and resinous base materials have long carried cultural weight. The fragrance pairs saffron and frankincense with a gourmand-leaning base of vanilla, caramel, and amber, threading the spiced and the sweet into a single composition rather than treating them as separate conversations. It's a profile that translates easily beyond regional fragrance scenes, offering a hook for wearers who might not have started with oriental perfumery but recognize the warmth when they encounter it.
