The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sultan Pasha has spent years exploring the amber genre from every angle. With Quintessentially Amber, he set out to do something that sounds simple but rarely succeeds: take every facet of amber, warm, resinous, creamy, spicy, sweet, salty, camphoric, incensy, and make them coexist in harmony. Created alongside perfumer Christian Carbonnel and launched in 2025, this is the distillation of that exploration. Not a single amber note, but a kaleidoscopic portrait of the entire genre.
The harmony here is the trick. Amber fragrances often lean into one or two facets, the sweet, the resinous, the smoky. Quintessentially Amber keeps all of them in conversation. The aldehydes give the opening a brightness that lifts the citrus and spices without making them sharp. The rose in the heart adds a floral softness that prevents the resinous notes from becoming heavy. And the base, ambergris, musk, vanilla, sandalwood, anchors everything in warmth that lasts for hours without becoming cloying. It's the balance that makes this fragrance work.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with aldehydes and citrus, bright, almost sparkling, catching the light in a way that feels both lively and refined. The aldehydes lend a powdery softness to the citrus, while subtle spice notes underneath add an intriguing complexity that keeps the opening from being simply bright. As the first hour passes, the heart takes center stage: amber, rose, labdanum, benzoin, and styrax arrive together, warm and resinous, with the rose threading through to soften the edges of the deeper balsamic elements. The labdanum provides a rich, almost medicinal warmth that balances beautifully against the sweeter benzoin, while the styrax adds a hint of vanillic resin that makes the whole composition feel indulgent. This heart phase holds for several hours, evolving slowly as the resinous notes begin to merge and deepen.
Cultural impact
Amber fragrances have a dedicated following among those who appreciate warm, resinous compositions that feel both timeless and versatile. Quintessentially Amber enters this category with a distinctive character, offering a scent that is approachable yet sophisticated. Its warm, resinous quality avoids heaviness, while the creamy notes prevent it from becoming cloying. The overall effect is a fragrance that feels both luxurious and wearable, a composition that bridges the gap between traditional oriental richness and modern sensibility.
