The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Soivohle emerged from Liz Zorn's fine-art practice in the early 1990s, when she began creating scent installations that treated fragrance as a medium for spatial and conceptual exploration. Tobacco & Tulle represents one of her most personal investigations: the tension between roughness and delicacy. Using tobacco, musk, and styrax as core materials, she built a fragrance that carries texture and weight without sacrificing softness. The amber and tuberose serve as counterweights, ensuring the final composition feels resolved rather than contradictory.
The note pairing in Tobacco & Tulle reflects Zorn's interest in material contrast. Tobacco and styrax bring rawness, while musk and amber soften the edges. Tuberose, despite being a floral, does not behave like a typical heart note. Instead, it provides an unexpected creaminess that keeps the composition grounded. This approach distinguishes the fragrance from simpler tobacco fragrances by ensuring the overall effect feels layered rather than singular. The balance between gritty and delicate is not accidental; it is the result of careful calibration across every note.
The evolution
Tobacco & Tulle moves from its opening forward into the heart, where tobacco and styrax arrive together, introducing a smoky-resinous character. Musk and amber provide warmth and softness, while tuberose threads through as a quiet, creamy element. The progression feels natural rather than staged, with each note complementing the others rather than competing. The drydown emphasizes the lasting qualities of musk and amber, with tobacco gradually settling into a warm, lingering softness. This arc mirrors the brand's broader philosophy: contrasts, when handled with intention, create something more compelling than either element alone.
Cultural impact
Tobacco has long been a symbol of sophistication and rebellion, appearing in literature, cinema, and street style as a marker of confidence. In recent years the scent’s blend with tulle‑soft florals taps into a nostalgic revival of classic masculine cues while embracing modern femininity, reflecting a cultural shift toward gender‑fluid expression. This juxtaposition resonates with audiences who appreciate heritage notes reinterpreted for contemporary wardrobes, making the fragrance a quiet commentary on evolving identity narratives.
