The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Liz Zorn, the artist-perfumer behind Soivohle, wanted to bottle the essence of a journeyman at work, the heat of the forge, the grit of labor, and the quiet pride after a day's toil. Drawing on her background creating olfactory installations, she crafted a scent that feels like a craftsman's commitment to honest materials and skilled labor.
The heart notes in Journeyman are chosen for their honesty. Incense represents the ritual of making, suede evokes the materials a craftsman touches daily, and oud brings a sense of history and weight. Vanilla and amber temper the intensity, preventing harshness and allowing the fragrance to feel lived-in rather than aggressive. Spicy notes remind the wearer that labor generates heat, that creation requires energy.
The evolution
The fragrance begins in medias res, diving straight into incense smoke that recalls a workshop filled with sandalwood shavings and burning resins. Suede emerges next, its soft texture contrasting with the sharp edges of smoke. Oud adds a complex, almost medicinal depth, while vanilla rounds the composition with unexpected warmth. Amber provides a resinous sweetness that balances the spiciness woven throughout. The progression feels like watching a craftsman work, each note appearing as if called forth by the previous one.
Cultural impact
Journeyman has become a polarising staple in niche circles, praised for its unapologetic smoky‑spice character while sparking debate over its bold b.o. vibe. Wearers often cite it as a statement piece for evenings and creative gatherings, noting its ability to stand out without shouting. Its rugged elegance places it alongside other artisan oud‑leather blends, reinforcing Soivohle’s reputation for daring, art‑driven perfumery.
