Heritage
A house, in its own words
Liz Zorn began her relationship with scent in the early 1990s, when she, a fine artist, started creating olfactory installations for gallery spaces. Those early experiments sparked a belief that perfume could function as visual art, a notion she carried into the commercial realm. In 2002 she launched Soivohle, a name that expands to Sending Out Inspired Vibrations Of Healthy Loving, and pronounced “see‑vo.” The launch marked a shift from studio installations to a boutique line of hand‑batched perfumes sold directly from her studio. Early releases emphasized natural, botanical ingredients and a minimalist presentation. In 2008 Soivohle introduced Green Oakmoss, a tongue‑in‑cheek response to the International Fragrance Association’s ban on natural oakmoss, demonstrating the brand’s willingness to question industry norms. A series of operational updates began in 2014, when Zorn restructured production and expanded the line to include both fully natural and modern synthetically‑enhanced scents. Over the following years, the house maintained a small‑scale model, offering studio visits by appointment and keeping each batch limited to preserve quality. Throughout its history, Soivohle has remained rooted in Zorn’s artistic background, positioning perfume as a tactile, visual, and emotional experience rather than a mass‑market commodity. The creative vision at Soivohle rests on the idea that scent can convey the same narrative depth as a painting or sculpture. Zorn approaches each composition as a vignette, selecting ingredients that evoke a specific memory or place. The brand’s values prioritize transparency, cruelty‑free practices, and a respect for botanical sources. By keeping formulas small and hand‑mixed, Soivohle aims to maintain a direct dialogue between creator and wearer, allowing subtle shifts in the perfume to be felt over time. The philosophy also embraces a playful critique of industry standards, as seen in the 2008 Green Oakmoss launch, which used humor to highlight regulatory constraints. Sustainability is addressed through vegan formulations and the avoidance of animal‑derived absolutes, while still honoring the tactile richness of natural extracts. This balance of artistic intent, ethical sourcing, and intimate scale defines Soivohle’s approach to modern perfumery.
