The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Liz Zorn designed Cuir Beurre in 2017. The name says it all: Cuir Beurre, leather butter. Soivohle's botanical house has always treated fragrance as olfactory art, approaching each composition as a sensory study rather than a market exercise. Choya Nakh and Choya Ral bring animalic warmth that is framed by lactones and cream rather than suppressed, creating something that feels intentional and carefully considered. The leather in this composition breathes, softens as it settles, and invites rather than dominates. There is a warmth here that resists the harsher qualities often associated with leather notes, instead offering something that feels almost generous in its character. Cuir Beurre rewards patience and rewards those who take time to discover its nuances.
Choya Nakh and Choya Ral bring a mineral character often described as roasted seashell, a quality that gives this composition its distinctive backbone. Combined with Cep absolute, that earthy mushroom quality adds depth without heaviness, creating a foundation that supports rather than overwhelms. Meanwhile, lactones create the buttery softness the name promises, wrapping leather and smoke in something almost edible that softens the more assertive qualities of the blend. Orris butter contributes powdery violet-like warmth, lending a floral softness that rounds out the composition.
The evolution
The opening arrives mineral and smoky, that distinctive roasted seashell quality visible immediately, warm and rounded before the complexity settles in. Fennel adds sweet green anise, lactone butter softens the smoke, and birch contributes additional warmth beneath. Within an hour, lactone cream takes over with orris powder, transforming the mineral character into something soft and almost powdery. The leather arrives quietly here, not harsh, not animalic in the aggressive sense, but warm and present beneath the softness. By the mid-drydown, sandalwood and vanilla arrive with the oud, creating a warm base that carries the scent through its final hours. The mineral quality never fully disappears. It settles, becomes intimate, works its way close to the skin and stays there. Lasting well into the next day on fabric.
Cultural impact
Cuir Beurre occupies an unusual position, mineral-smoky leather with buttery softness, powdery iris warmth, and persistent animalic depth. The mineral-smoky character tied to Choya Nakh and Choya Ral gives it a distinctive roasted quality that stands apart from more conventional leather fragrances. For those seeking something with genuine character and that mineral-smoky signature, it rewards attention.
