The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anna Sokolova built this around a single plant: the blackcurrant bush. Not the berries everyone reaches for, the leaves. They're tart, bitter-green, almost astringent. In perfumery, they're criminally underrated. Where most houses treat blackcurrant as a fruity heart note, Sokolova put the whole bush on display: the leaves, the stems, the quiet darkness of fruit that hasn't been sweetened yet. Cassis Chypre is her argument that the bush is more interesting than the berry.
The chypre structure gives it backbone. Oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, the classic triad that makes chypre chypre. But Sokolova layers in aldehydes, which add a bright, almost crystalline shimmer to the top notes. And Somalian frankincense brings smoky resin that balances the green. It's not a typical chypre. It's a green chypre, where the leaves and the incense argue with each other, and the berries sit in the middle, sweet and sour and utterly itself.
The evolution
The aldehydes arrive first, bright, shimmering, almost crystalline. Then the blackcurrant leaf kicks in: tart, green, that bitter bite of stems. The berries arrive slow, darkening the whole thing. Juniper and sage add herbal depth, while the Somalian frankincense smoke curls underneath, weaving through the fragrance like a whispered shadow. By the heart, the green and the smoke engage in a dialogue between fresh and resinous, the herbal notes and smoky undertones creating tension and harmony. Then the base arrives: oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, amber, musk. The drydown is where chypre lives, where the deep, earthy foundation takes center stage, wrapping the earlier notes in a warm, lingering embrace. The berries and incense linger beneath, still present, still talking, as the hours pass and the composition settles into its final form.
Cultural impact
Cassis Chypre occupies a specific niche: green chypre with genuine character. Shadows, not sunshine. The aldehydes meet oakmoss in a way that feels intentional, while blackcurrant leaf, juniper, and sage add their voice to the composition. Somalian frankincense curls underneath the heart, the fresh and resinous notes holding a conversation. Oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, amber, and musk anchor the base, bringing the whole thing to a close with quiet confidence.
