The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Antonio Martino Visconti built this fragrance around a deliberate tension: the bright, almost aggressive citrus of the opening gives way to smoky, resinous depth that reveals itself hours later. The opening hits with bergamot and mandarin cutting sharp against the air, while underneath, black pepper and dried fruits add a jammy sweetness that keeps the assault from being purely acidic. As the minutes pass, the citrus softens, and the composition shifts into something darker, denser. Resinous smoke begins to dominate, backed by vetiver's dry, earthy character and the warm animalic presence of tobacco. The sensation is that of stepping into something vast and unfamiliar and realizing you belong there. Ytzma was crafted for the wearer who doesn't need permission to enter a room.
What makes Ytzma technically interesting is its structure as a modern chypre, a family known for complexity and contrast. The classic chypre triad (bergamot, labdanum, oakmoss) gets reinterpreted here with Calabrian bergamot at the top, grey musk and ambergris anchoring the base, and an unusually prominent oud presence threading through both heart and drydown. That double appearance of oud, in the heart alongside peach blossom and magnolia, then again in the base with tobacco and sandalwood, creates a continuity that most oud fragrances lack.
The evolution
The opening is a citrus event. Bergamot, mandarin, and lemon arrive sharp, almost aggressive, with the dried fruits adding a jammy sweetness that keeps it from being purely acidic. Nutmeg and black pepper provide warmth underneath, creating an opening that is bright and assertive. Before long, the florals begin their takeover. Magnolia arrives first, creamy and slightly green, followed by Moroccan rose and orange blossom absolute. The oud surfaces here too, but it is shy, more texture than presence. By the second hour, the composition shifts. The citrus recedes, the florals soften, and the base notes begin their long, slow reveal. Tobacco absolute leads, backed by vetiver's dry, smoky character. The castoreum adds animalic depth without being crude. Cypress and sandalwood provide the woody structure, while patchouli and vanilla absolute create a sweetness that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Ytzma occupies a specific niche in the fragrance landscape: a bold, unapologetically structured chypre that bridges the gap between classic structure and modern sensibility. The composition prioritizes presence and longevity over subtlety, making it a statement fragrance that announces itself without apology. The citrus opening gives it enough versatility for daytime use, while the deep, resinous base makes it particularly suited for evening wear and cooler months. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
