The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gingembre Rouge Edition Or is the 2020 chapter of Roger & Gallet's ginger exploration. Alberto Morillas and Amandine Clerc-Marie built it around ginger and ginger flower, pairing the root's clean heat with the bloom's soft white floral, letting fruit pull them apart on skin. Mandarin brightens the opening with a citrus snap that feels immediate and awake. Pomegranate adds a tart sweetness into the heart, its ruby-bright acidity cutting through the spice without dulling it. Litchi layers in that translucent juiciness, a watery sweetness that lifts the composition into something almost edible. Candied ginger in the base keeps the spice alive long after the florals fade, its sugary warmth wrapping around cedar and musk as the drydown settles into something quietly persistent.
What makes this composition distinctive is the layering of ginger across all three phases. The ginger hits first, then ginger flower softens into the heart with orange blossom for a tropical-warm floral, then candied ginger sweetens the drydown without tipping into gourmand territory. The spice is present from the first spray to the final hours of wear, never retreating to a single moment. The fruit notes feel like a frame around the ginger, not a replacement for it, while the florals add a creamy sweetness that bridges the sharp opening and the warmer base.
The evolution
On skin, the first fifteen minutes are all brightness. Mandarin and pomegranate do that citrus-fruit pop that makes you check your wrist twice. The ginger arrives within minutes, not as a burn but as a clean, almost green warmth, like the smell of fresh ginger root sliced in a kitchen with the windows open. The heart takes over as the opening settles: ginger flower and orange blossom soften everything, the litchi adds a wet, translucent quality that keeps it from going powdery. This is the most floral phase, the one where the white floral notes sit closest to the surface. After roughly two hours the base settles in. Candied ginger sweetens the cedar, musk warms the whole composition, and the drydown lasts another two hours, maybe three on well-moisturized skin.
Cultural impact
Gingembre Rouge Edition Or stands out for the way it builds its entire structure around ginger, rather than treating the spice as a single passing accent. The composition pairs ginger with ginger flower across all three phases of wear, a layered approach that gives the fragrance continuity from opening to drydown. The result is a scent that feels coherent rather than disjointed, with each phase handing off smoothly to the next. Ginger as a structural ingredient rather than a top-note flash has become a recognizable approach in modern perfumery, and this 2020 release sits firmly within that trend.
