The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ecorce d'Epices launched in 2020 from perfumer Alain Verjus, part of the Aqva Aromatica collection. Mint and rosemary lead the opening, bringing an aromatic freshness that announces itself clearly on first spray. The herbal quality of the rosemary weaves through the cool menthol of the mint, creating an opening that feels bright and intentional rather than sweet. As the top notes settle, warm spice begins to emerge, taking over from the initial freshness without overtaking it entirely. The composition moves into its heart where the spice deepens, becoming more present on the skin. Woody materials provide the foundation, lending body and structure that carries the scent through the day. The dry down reveals a warm, aromatic character that lingers without becoming heavy or overwhelming.
The aromatic-fresh character comes from leading with mint and rosemary, a combination that establishes a clear green, herbal presence from the first moments. Pimento leaf brings its own distinct warmth, green and slightly fiery, adding complexity to the evolving composition. Labdanum adds a resinous warmth that deepens the heart without heaviness, creating a smooth transition into the base. The guaiac wood contributes dry, slightly smoky notes that feel uniquely aromatic, giving this fragrance a signature that lingers in memory.
The evolution
The opening hits bright, mint and bergamot cutting through with an immediate freshness. Within minutes, the herbal-green quality from rosemary and rose takes over, with the pimento leaf bringing its warm spice underneath. The mint doesn't disappear; it softens into the background, keeping the heart from feeling heavy. Around the 15-minute mark, the labdanum and guaiac wood assert themselves. The labdanum adds a warm, resinous quality while the guaiac wood brings its dry, slightly smoky character, this is the phase that defines the fragrance. The transition is smooth but distinct: one moment it's fresh and herbal, the next it's warm and woody without losing the thread that connects them. The drydown settles into incense and patchouli carrying the warmth forward, with amber and cedar creating a soft, lingering finish that stays close to the skin for hours.
Cultural impact
Ecorce d'Epices offers a distinctive aromatic-fresh character. The mint and rosemary lead the composition, creating a bright herbal foundation that sets it apart from more conventional approaches. The mint-herbal-spice combination places it among more experimental offerings in contemporary perfumery, appealing to those who appreciate unconventional note combinations. Independent houses like Richard James have the freedom to explore compositions that might not fit mainstream tastes, and this fragrance demonstrates that approach.
