The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Extraordinaire Saba arrives in 2023 from perfumer Honorine Blanc, working within the visual and thematic language of Reine de Saba's collection. The house draws its identity from the Queen of Sheba, a figure associated with ancient aromatic trade routes, with luxury that predates borders. This particular fragrance was conceived as one of the house's bolder expressions, built around the tension between smoke and skin.
What makes Extraordinaire Saba stand apart is its willingness to let the leather breathe. Rather than using it as a supporting player in a sweeter composition, the fragrance centers leather as the protagonist, backed by incense and amber, sure, but never softened into submission. The Cypriol (nagarmotha) adds an earthy, slightly green undertone that keeps the leather from feeling purely animalic. It's a composition that rewards patience, unfolding slowly rather than announcing itself all at once.
The evolution
The opening arrives mineral and slightly marine, Ambroxan doing the heavy lifting before the frankincense catches up. Thirty minutes in, the smoke becomes the point. Not a fireplace, not an ashtray, the smoke of something ancient, like incense in a stone courtyard. The leather doesn't announce itself immediately; it builds underneath, rising through the resinous haze until it becomes the dominant texture. By hour three, you're wearing leather that smells like it's been there all along, warmed by skin. The drydown, benzoin, Peru balsam, labdanum, keeps things soft at the edges, but the leather holds. On fabric, it can last into the next day.
Cultural impact
Extraordinaire Saba sits within a specific niche corner: resinous leather fragrances with real presence. It shares territory with bold orientals, smoky, animalic, unapologetic. What sets it apart is the perfumer's decision to let leather lead rather than support. Wearers who connect with it tend to describe it as the scent of someone who doesn't need to announce themselves, which is perhaps the highest compliment a quiet fragrance can receive.
