The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Balqis is the Arabic name for the Queen of Sheba, the figure who crossed borders not for conquest, but for something rarer: genuine exchange. Reine de Saba built its house around that legend, drawing on traditions where fragrance speaks its own language. Balqis Reine de Saba translates that history into something wearable: a powdery floral that carries the gravity of ancient luxury without any of the ceremony. Perfumer Nathalie Lorson worked with magnolia, heliotrope, and osmanthus, materials with deep roots in both Eastern and Western perfumery, building a composition that echoes across traditions without belonging to any single one. The result is a fragrance that feels both timeless and immediate, the kind of scent that invites you to lean in closer.
What makes the structure interesting is how the floral heart refuses to stay secondary. In most powdery vanillas, the base does the heavy lifting and the middle fades politely into the background. Here, the heliotrope and osmanthus absolute hold their ground. The osmanthus, with its distinctive apricot-leather nuance, keeps the floral from going entirely soft, adding a Fruity aspect that most competitors in this accord space simply skip. Black pepper in the heart is used sparingly: not for sharpness, but for the warmth that prevents the whole composition from going flat. The result is a pyramid where every tier earns its place, rather than a vanilla soliloquy with supporting characters.
The evolution
The opening is bright and citrus-forward, bergamot and mandarin orange arrive cleanly, with the magnolia already softening the edges before the top notes fully settle. The citrus clarity gives way to a floral heart as heliotrope and osmanthus emerge together, their sweet-almond and apricot-leather characters weaving into the remaining bergamot. The black pepper adds a quiet warmth that keeps the floral from reading as innocent. As the composition develops, Indonesian patchouli grounds everything with a fresh, green aromatic character while sandalwood and vanilla create a powdery warmth that clings close. Musk amplifies the skin-warm quality without pushing into animalic territory. Moderate sillage throughout means the fragrance announces itself gently and stays that way. The drydown is intimate and close, vanilla and patchouli lingering on the skin for hours after the rest has settled.
Cultural impact
Among the house's collection of tributes to the Queen of Sheba, Balqis stands apart for its powdery floral restraint. The heliotrope-osmanthus pairing in the heart brings a sweet-almond and apricot nuance that adds unexpected elegance and complexity. This combination gives Balqis a distinctive character, offering legendary inspiration with a lighter, more nuanced touch that feels both refined and inviting.
