The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iconic Statement Black is the 2026 entry in Reebok's Iconic Statement series. Black is the moody one, built around an ozonic top and a drydown that doesn't want to leave. The fragrance moves through ozonic freshness at the surface and settles into an animalic, suede-tinged base. Black pepper, bergamot, and apple set the opening. Sage, lavender, and orris anchor the middle. Patchouli, amberwood, saffron, and suede carry the close. The nose behind it is Jérôme di Marino, a perfumer whose work has appeared in a range of sport-adjacent and lifestyle launches. Reebok has worked with Tailored Perfumes, the marketing house that handles the Iconic Statement lineup.
What makes Black interesting structurally is the pairing of an ozonic top with animalic and suede base notes. Ozonic accords are typically associated with clean, blue-fragranced compositions, and pairing them here with ambergris and suede pulls the whole thing toward warmth before the drydown even begins. The tension between cold air and warm skin is the composition's spine, and the way that tension holds rather than collapsing into a single temperature is what gives the scent its identity. The herbal heart, sage and lavender, is unusual in a men's aromatic built around pepper and saffron.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are deceptive. There's a genuine cold-weather snap from the ozonic accord, a clean, almost electric lift that reads as fresh air rather than fruit. Black pepper and bergamot cut through it with a sharpness that wakes the nose up, the pepper adding a dry, slightly smoked edge and the bergamot keeping the whole top from collapsing into pure freshness. Apple softens the edges, just barely, bringing a quiet roundness that keeps the opening from feeling clinical. Then the hand-off happens. The ozone recedes and ambergris comes forward, slightly saline, slightly animalic in a way that most modern compositions avoid. Sage and lavender show up next, and this is the phase that defines Black for most of its life. It's herbal but not green, aromatic but not sharp. Lavender here reads more like fabric softener than a fougère ingredient.
Cultural impact
Iconic Statement Black fits within Reebok's fragrance work alongside its apparel and footwear releases. The collection's positioning is earned confidence, the kind that can be carried a gym, a bar, or anywhere the latter covers. Black reads as the moodier, more nocturnal entry in a lineup that also includes Red and Blue, and it leans into evening wear and cooler temperatures without losing its athletic backbone. The fragrance's structural choices, particularly the cold-warm tension between its ozonic top and suede-tinged base, set it apart from the brighter, more citric entries in the same lineup.
