The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Raer Scents released No. 02: Cade + Frankincense as a focused study in two raw materials. The spotlight falls on cade wood and its smoky character, a material produced from juniper and long valued for the burnt intensity it brings to a composition. Cade wood oil isn't widely used, so finding it front and center here sets the tone immediately. The brand paired it with frankincense and Turkish rose absolute to temper the intensity, creating a composition that leans into fire and resin rather than away from them. The result feels intentional, a deliberate pairing where each element earns its place through contrast: the dense smoke of cade against the dry lift of frankincense, the faint sweetness of rose absolute threading warmth through an otherwise austere landscape.
Cade wood oil isn't common in mainstream perfumery. It's produced through the destructive distillation of juniper wood, yielding a material that smells closer to a fireplace than a forest. The scent profile is dense and immediate, the kind of smoke that announces itself before you've leaned in to smell it. The rose absolute and guaiac wood add subtle sweetness and depth without softening the edges, each working quietly behind the dominant cade.
The evolution
The opening hits with Spanish cade tar and French cade juniper wood working in tandem, creating an immediate sense of burning wood and charred resin. The smoke is dense, almost opaque, with a phenolic edge that cuts through the air and fills the immediate space. There's no easing into this composition; it arrives fully formed, commanding attention from the first breath. As the opening progresses, Turkish rose absolute emerges through the smoke. It's not a blooming floral moment, more like catching the scent of roses preserved in amber resin. The rose adds a faint sweetness and a subtle warmth that cuts through the heavier smoke without diluting it, offering brief moments of relief from the dominant char. Frankincense enters the mid-phase as a secondary voice, offering its own dry quality that complements rather than competes with the cade.
Cultural impact
Raer Scents occupies a specific corner of the fragrance world, one where botanical materials take precedence over synthetic construction. Raer 02 Cade + Frankincense reflects that philosophy directly, building an entire composition around cade tar and juniper wood, two materials with deep roots in traditional perfumery and aromatic practice. Cade has long been associated with smoke rituals and old apothecary preparations, and the fragrance leans into that lineage without ornamentation.
