The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
No. 07: Orris+Cacao launched in 2024 as a study in contrast. Two ingredients rarely paired in the natural perfumery canon: rare Tuscan orris root and cacao bean. The composition draws on a careful selection of botanicals, each chosen for its role in the tension between the two lead materials. Moroccan neroli lifts the opening with a bright, almost bitter floral edge. Brazilian rosewood settles in underneath, adding a faint woody sweetness that softens without sweetening. Sichuan peppercorn contributes a buzzing, electric heat that prickles across the surface, keeping the chocolate from tipping into dessert territory. French oakmoss grounds the whole structure with its damp, forest-floor depth.
Orris root takes years to mature, and that slow aging is part of what gives it such a distinctive presence in any composition it joins. The rhizome of the iris plant must develop its scent slowly after harvest, revealing that distinctive powdery, violet-like depth only over time. Pairing it with cacao places two seemingly opposed materials side by side: chocolate reads gourmand and sweet, while iris reads cool and mineral. The friction between them is the point. Sichuan pepper adds a buzzing, almost electric heat that keeps the sweetness honest.
The evolution
On skin, the opening is sharp and bright, driven by the neroli's lift and the pepper's tingling heat. There's a slightly numbing quality here, the way your tongue feels after biting into something unexpected. The cacao arrives next, not as a literal chocolate smell but as a warm, earthy depth that grounds the brightness. Then the orris opens fully. Powdery, cool, with that violet-edged minerality. This is the longest phase, and it's where the fragrance finds its voice. The rosewood warms underneath, adding a faint woody sweetness. As the fragrance develops, the pepper gradually recedes, but the orris and cacao hold their shape. The drydown is intimate: powdered iris, soft cocoa, and oakmoss clinging close to the skin. The composition wears close rather than projecting widely, holding its details near the wearer like a private signature.
Cultural impact
No. 07: Orris+Cacao marks a notable move for the house, pairing two naturals that don't often share space in a composition. The fragrance appeals to wearers who want powdery iris without the typical lipstick-pretty florals, and who appreciate cacao rendered earthy rather than gourmand-sweet. It's a pick for people drawn to compositions built on contrast: cool against warm, floral against food, lift against weight. The release continues the brand's interest in giving botanical ingredients room to breathe on skin, and it rewards the kind of slow, attentive wearing that lets each note find its place in the structure.
