The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Accord No. 03: Ambre emerged from Raer Scents' third limited release, composed by Stefan Kehl. Kehl built an amber that went somewhere different. Where many interpretations lean into warmth and powder, this one moved toward rawer territory, resinous density cut with green accents and a quietly animalic drydown. The botanical constraint shaped the composition: the sweetness was earned rather than manufactured. The single run gave it the status of a rare object, one chance, then gone.
What makes this amber unusual is its refusal to resolve into something easy. The opening is almost aggressive in its resinousness, sticky, dense, the kind of warmth that coats rather than floats. Then the osmanthus arrives, fruity and sweet, and somehow these contradictory impulses coexist without canceling each other out. The ambrette seed is the element that changes everything: it adds an animalic, musky quality that becomes part of the structure rather than something to conceal. That's the bet Kehl made.
The evolution
The first minutes are resinous and dense. Peru balsam and styrax announce themselves without apology, warm, slightly sticky, the texture of something physical. Then the character shifts. The ambrette seed surfaces with its quiet animalic quality, and the osmanthus introduces sweetness that reads more fruity than floral. These two phases don't quite match. It's a feature, not a flaw. Over the next while, amyris settles into the composition, adding a green, drying quality that prevents the sweetness from becoming syrupy. By the mid-wear, the tonka bean emerges, smooth and warm, lending its characteristic coumarin richness. Oakmoss lingers in the base, earthy and grounding, keeping everything close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Accord No. 03: Ambre was discontinued after its 2018 release, a fact that has made it a point of discussion among those who track the brand's output. The botanical-only positioning and the unconventional spirit of Raer's Berlin studio attract wearers who approach fragrance with curiosity and care. This particular accord, with its animalic undercurrent and its departure from amber's typical sweetness, draws those who prefer their warmth with complications.
