The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Stefan Kehl designed Cade as the second Accord for Raer Scents in 2017, building around cade oil, an extract from juniper wood via pyrolysis. While many fragrances treat smoke as a fleeting dry‑down cameo, Kehl made it the core of the composition. The scent opens with a sharp, resinous edge that gives way to a warm, smoldering heart of charred wood, the smoke curling through a base of earthy, slightly sweet pine. As it settles on the skin, the smoky presence remains assertive, framing the other materials rather than disappearing. The resulting fragrance poses a clear structural challenge: how to let smoke serve as the architecture of the scent instead of a decorative flourish.
The combination of cade and sandalwood carries weight here, Indian sandalwood's creamy warmth against cade's smoky austerity. Galbanum adds an aromatic, slightly bitter green note that prevents the composition from becoming purely dark. The evergreen heart (fir, pine, spruce) grounds the smoke in living matter. It's the forest edge: burned and alive at once. This tension, fresh conifer against resinous smoke, is what makes Cade feel northern, precise, and unlike mainstream smoky fragrances that lean into incense or oud.
The evolution
The opening arrives green and sharp. Galbanum leads, cutting the air before the conifer needles arrive. Neroli brings a brief citrus-brightness, like sunlight through pine. The smoke in the opening is present but restrained, more smolder than blaze. The heart phase unfolds the evergreen canopy: fir, pine, spruce. Guaiac wood adds its smoky, slightly medicinal character. Sandalwood enters the foundation, creamy and warm beneath the dry woods. The drydown is where Cade earns its hours. Eight to ten hours later, the smoke deepens and settles close to skin. Vanilla whispers through. The woods remain, guaiac, sandalwood, a ghost of cade, but they've become intimate, personal, the memory of the fire rather than the fire itself.
Cultural impact
Accord No. 02: Cade arrived in 2017 as part of Raer Scents' botanical‑first positioning. The scent is built around cade oil, extracted from juniper wood through pyrolysis, and pairs it with coniferous notes to create a dense, smoky core. From the first spray, a sharp, piney brightness cuts through the air, quickly giving way to a smoldering, resinous warmth that lingers on the skin. As the fragrance evolves, the smoke becomes the dominant element, wrapping the other components in a quiet, persistent haze.
