The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Accord No. 05 emerged from a single question: what does a classic fougère become when it steps out of its own shadow? The structure, anchored by oakmoss, had become familiar territory for many fragrance wearers. Perfumer Stefan Kehl and the Raer team worked to reimagine that structure, elevating white pepper into a central role rather than a background presence. The 2019 launch placed it as the fifth in the Accord series, each release examining a different botanical element. Here, that element was heat, the clean, bright sting of white pepper meeting tobacco's dried weight.
What makes this work is the restraint at the edges. The tangerine opening isn't sweet, it's sharp, almost citrus-bitter, cutting through the air with precision. The immortelle doesn't bloom into honey so much as hold its shape, dry and slightly medicinal alongside the clove. Galbanum adds that smoked-green note, the ghost of fields after rain. It's direct and intentional, confident in what it is without apology.
The evolution
The opening offers tangerine first, then chamomile cooling the edges into something almost minty-clean. White pepper takes over and doesn't let go. The heart unfolds immortelle and tobacco simultaneously, one warm, one dry, both competing for space in a way that keeps the whole thing alive. As the fragrance develops, the oakmoss surfaces, bringing that fougère signature back into focus. Clove and benzoin settle underneath like embers, adding warmth and resinous depth. The composition maintains its dynamism, with each layer revealing new nuances over time.
Cultural impact
Accord No. 05 entered a niche market where compositions often leaned toward predictability. By placing white pepper at the center of the structure, the fragrance offered something distinct from the start. The emphasis on botanical materials meant accepting certain characteristics in exchange for clarity of material. For a certain kind of wearer, someone seeking distinction, that approach resonated.
