The beginning
Accord No. 07: Orris + Cacao dropped in 2024, joining RAER Scents' Berlin-built Accord series, a collection built around single botanical ideas rendered in 100% natural materials. Where earlier editions like Nagarmotha and Cade dug into smoke and root, No. 07 chases something softer: the meeting point of two materials with very different textures. Tuscan orris root brings its cool, almost mineral powder, and cacao bean comes in with something warmer, darker, a little dangerous. The brand's description calls it indulgently playful, and that's the right read. This isn't a floral hiding behind chocolate. It's two textures pressed against each other, each making the other more itself.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between orris and cacao, two materials that occupy completely different territory in perfumery. Orris is cool, rooty, almost violet-powdery after the rhizome ages for years. Cacao is warm, fatty, faintly bitter, the raw bean before sugar enters the picture. Pairing them means constructing a scent that breathes both registers at once, neither the violet-powder room nor the dessert table. The Moroccan neroli and Brazilian rosewood bring a floral lift that keeps the chocolate from sinking. Sichuan pepper adds a buzzy, slightly numbing heat that wakes everything up.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the cacao, raw and almost nutty, the way cocoa smells before the sugar and butter get involved. There's an earthiness to it that suggests soil rather than dessert, and it sits close to the skin rather than projecting outward. As the minutes pass, the orris arrives in force, and the two materials start negotiating. The iris powder cools the chocolate down without killing its warmth, turning the scent into something that reads like a fine cocoa dusting rather than a candy bar. Sichuan pepper flickers in and out through the first hour, a dry heat that keeps the composition from going too soft. By the two-hour mark, the neroli and rosewood have mostly faded, and the drydown settles into orris, oakmoss, and the ghost of cacao. It's quieter now, more intimate, the kind of scent that stays on a scarf or a collar the next morning. Longevity sits in the moderate range, close to skin after the opening settles.
