The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rabanne, founded in Paris in 1966, built its identity on architectural daring, transforming industrial materials into statement pieces that redefined what fashion could look like. The house's fragrances have always echoed this ethos, structural and bold. Million Gold, released in 2024, continues this conversation between architecture and scent, translating the visual language of metallic shine and structured form into something wearable. Perfumer Aliénor Massenet took inspiration from the flash of a gold-tinged sunrise, aiming to bottle that specific moment of light breaking across the Parisian skyline.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy of contrast. Mandarin Orange and Pear might seem like an obvious fruity opening, but the addition of Tonka Bean and Lavender introduces unexpected complexity that rewards attention. The four-note opening is not decorative. It sets up the opulent heart of Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine, and Rose by providing initial freshness that makes the floral richness feel earned rather than inevitable. The base, meanwhile, refuses to abandon the fragrance to pure sweetness. Vanilla and Ecomusk provide warmth and modernity, but Oakmoss grounds them, echoing Rabanne's architectural restraint even in a fragrance built around golden warmth.
The evolution
The opening burst of Million Gold maps directly to that sunrise metaphor, Mandarin Orange providing the sharp, immediate light while Pear adds the soft fruit-forward warmth of early morning. Tonka Bean grounds this initial brightness with a hint of honeyed warmth, and the unlikely inclusion of Lavender introduces a cool, herbal counterpoint that prevents the opening from feeling straightforward. As the fragrance settles, the heart of Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine, and Rose takes over, the tropical creaminess of Ylang-Ylang playing against the romantic powderiness of Rose in a duet that feels simultaneously lush and modern. The drydown completes the sunrise arc, Vanilla emerging to provide golden warmth while Ecomusk maintains that clean, contemporary softness. Oakmoss anchors everything, earthy and grounded, pulling the fragrance back down toward something more austere as the morning light fully arrives.
Cultural impact
Million Gold’s launch was amplified by a high‑gloss campaign shot by Mert Alas and directed by Manu Cossu, starring Gigi Hadid. The visual narrative of sleek gold against urban backdrops reinforced Rabanne’s reputation for futuristic luxury, positioning the scent as a modern statement piece for confident women who appreciate both sparkle and structure.
