The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Queen of Hearts arrived in 2010, composed by Steve DeMercado for Queen Latifah's fragrance line with Parlux Fragrances. The composition opens with a fruity-spicy announcement, bright berries and plum giving way to a spiced warmth that commands attention. A floral heart softens the initial burst without disappearing entirely, jasmine and white flowers weaving through the blend. The base layers incense and amber against a warm backdrop, creating a scent that transitions smoothly from day into evening. The overall impression remains warm without tipping into heaviness, floral without becoming delicate.
Frankincense brings a smoky, slightly camphorated resinous quality that grounds sweetness and adds depth. Amber contributes warmth and a honeyed character that enriches the drydown. Together, these materials create a base that feels rich and enveloping. Vanilla and musk temper the composition, adding intimacy and softness. It's a well-constructed oriental-spicy fragrance with excellent projection that fills space without overwhelming.
The evolution
The opening arrives immediately, cinnamon's warm spice cutting through ripe plum sweetness. Bergamot and citruses lift the top notes, preventing heaviness. Green notes thread through, adding a subtle herbal quality that keeps the opening from feeling like a dessert. As the composition develops, jasmine takes over with its indolic, creamy floral presence. White flowers and red berries soften the transition into something more romantic. The composition settles into its warmest phase as incense and frankincense emerge from the base, adding smoky resinous depth. Patchouli grounds everything with its earthy, slightly camphorated character. Amber and vanilla keep the warmth alive while musk adds intimacy. The fragrance evolves gracefully, transitioning through its phases rather than fading dramatically.
Cultural impact
Queen of Hearts has maintained its presence in fragrance discussions since its launch. The composition blends oriental warmth with spicy and floral elements in a way that appeals to those seeking a distinctive scent. Its rich structure and layered development have contributed to its continued relevance among fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate well-crafted celebrity fragrances. The interplay of smoky, resinous, and sweet notes creates a memorable olfactory experience that stands apart from more straightforward offerings in the category.
