    Steve DeMercado

Steve DeMercado entered the perfume world after studying chemistry and fine arts, a blend that gave him both technical rigor and a visual sense of composition. Early in his career he joined a boutique lab in New Jersey, where he learned to balance market demands with artistic ambition. By the early 2000s he earned his first high‑profile commission, crafting a scent for a celebrity launch that topped sales charts and earned a FiFi nomination. The success opened doors to collaborations with major fashion houses and led him to co‑found OK Fine Fragrances, a studio that champions independent creation. Today he serves as Executive Vice President of Perfumery at Fragrance Resources, guiding new talent while still shaping iconic bottles for global brands.

    How Steve composes

Steve favors a clean, linear structure that highlights a dominant theme while supporting it with subtle accents. He often starts with a strong heart—rose, jasmine, or a citrus burst—and builds a supportive base of woods, amber, or musk that adds depth without overwhelming the lead. His palette includes classic ingredients like Bulgarian rose, Indian sandalwood, and French vanilla, but he also experiments with modern synthetics that provide precision. He frequently employs a technique called “accord layering,” where he stacks two or three simple accords to create a nuanced, evolving scent profile.

    Philosophy

    What drives Steve

DeMercado believes a fragrance must capture a moment and translate it into skin‑deep memory. He treats each brief as a conversation, listening to the client’s story before selecting ingredients that echo the intended mood. He values clarity over excess, preferring to let a single accord speak loudly rather than layering countless notes. For him, the creative spark comes from observing everyday textures—leather seats, fresh rain, a city’s night air—and turning those sensations into scent. This approach keeps his work grounded and instantly relatable.
