    Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers, established in 1818 by Henry Sands Brooks in New York, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating apparel brand in the United States. The house introduced the concept of ready-to-wear fashion to America, fundamentally changing how Americans dressed. Brooks Brothers expanded into fragrance production through a licensing partnership with Interparfums, beginning with men's colognes in the late 1990s. The fragrance collection carries forward the brand's heritage of understated elegance, offering scents that reflect the formality and polish associated with Brooks Brothers tailoring. Signature offerings include the 1818 Signature Cologne, the Classic Cologne line, and various limited edition releases. The brand maintains stores across the United States and internationally, though its fragrance distribution has at times included off-price retail channels.

    Heritage

A house, in its own words

Henry Sands Brooks opened his first store in 1818, operating from his own house in New York City. The founding principle centered on quality construction and consistent sizing, an innovation at a time when most clothing was made to order. Brooks reportedly personally oversaw every aspect of production, from fabric selection to final finishing, a practice that established the house's reputation for reliability. The brand introduced the ready-to-wear suit to American consumers, transforming the retail landscape for men's clothing. In 1854, Brooks Brothers became pioneers in the industry as they continued to expand their ready-to-wear offerings. The company supplied clothing to forty-one of the forty-five presidents from Ulysses S. Grant onward, earning a reputation as the default choice for formal American dress. Throughout its history, the house maintained flagship locations including its iconic Madison Avenue store, which opened in 1915 and became a landmark destination for men seeking refined attire. The brand weathered economic downturns, two world wars, and changing fashion trends, maintaining continuous operation for over two centuries. Brooks Brothers filed for bankruptcy in 2020, was acquired by Authentix Brands in 2021, and later by Sparx in 2023, representing significant transitions for the storied house.

The Brooks Brothers approach to fragrance mirrors its approach to tailoring: clean lines, traditional construction, and an avoidance of excess. Rather than chasing trends, the fragrance collection emphasizes classic masculine and feminine scents that complement rather than dominate. The brand positions its scents as appropriate for professional environments and formal occasions, aligning with its heritage as a source of business attire. Fragrance releases have often paralleled major retail collections, creating thematic connections between clothing and scent. The partnership with Interparfums has allowed the house to maintain fragrance production while focusing on its core apparel business. Scents like New York for Gentlemen and Madison reflect the brand's urban American identity, drawing on the sophistication associated with the cities where Brooks Brothers built its reputation. The philosophy extends to accessibility, with Brooks Brothers fragrances available at various price points and retail channels to serve a broad customer base.
