Why it exists.
The beginning
Art 04 from the Profumi d'Art × Armaf collaboration isn't named subtly. "The One And Only Oud" makes its intention plain from the label. Italian perfumer Arturetto Landi composed this 2024 release as part of a numbered series of fragrances. The collection itself represents a meeting of creative minds, with Art 04 speaking a language of its own. Where most oud fragrances might lean a single direction, this one stacks fruit, florals, leather, and animalic accords into something dense and contradictory. The fruit basket up top is generous almost to a fault, but it's the cumin threading through that keeps it from collapsing into sweetness. It reads like a deliberate provocation. An oud that refuses to behave like one.
The composition draws from distinct olfactive traditions and never pretends they don't coexist. The opening leans into fruit-forward richness, where plum and strawberry soften the resin's intensity. The heart, though, carries serious floral weight. Carnation, jasmine, magnolia, rose, saffron. These aren't decorative. They carry weight. The base layers numerous materials including castoreum, civet, and leather, creating the kind of dense, slightly dirty drydown that feels rooted in classic perfumery craft. The oud itself sits inside this architecture rather than dominating it.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes belong to fruit. Plum and strawberry arrive sweet, almost cordial-like, with bergamot and lime trying to cut through. Then the cumin lands, and the whole opening pivots. It reads smoky, savory, a little sweaty. The sweetness doesn't vanish but it takes a back seat. As the heart opens, saffron and iris take over, powdery and slightly metallic, and the florals cluster into something closer to lipstick than bouquet. Jasmine gives it warmth. Carnation adds clove's spice. Around the third hour, the base asserts itself. Oud shows up without fanfare, wrapped in leather, with castoreum and civet adding the faintest animalic hum underneath. Cistus threads its way in with a warm, resinous grip that bridges the florals and the deeper base notes. By hour six, it's a skin scent. Warm, resinous, faintly sweet, with sandalwood and white musk holding the shape.
Cultural impact
Art 04 embraces an unapologetic approach to oud composition that wears its ambition openly. Where some contemporary releases pare oud down to a minimal gesture, this one expands in the opposite direction. It throws everything at the resin: fruit, florals, leather, animalics. The result appeals to wearers who want their oud loud and layered, the kind of fragrance that holds attention from across a room rather than waiting to be discovered up close. It's a proposition that takes fruit-topped oud traditions and runs them through a dense floral heart, landing somewhere unexpected.
