Why it exists.
The beginning
Phlur launched in 2015 in Austin, Texas, with a focus on mindful formulation and storytelling-driven fragrance concepts. The brand wanted to translate the feeling of a specific person into scent, envisioned as someone you might encounter at a gathering. That persona was described as sturdy yet unexpectedly bright. In 2022 perfumer Robert Gaudelli answered the call, translating the brand narrative into a palette structured around citrus brightness transitioning to warm florals and woody depth. Bergamot and lemon became the entry point, establishing the initial impression, while the drydown needed to reflect both strength and approachability.
Phlur selects notes based on the emotional narrative they support rather than technical complexity. The bergamot and lemon opening establishes the approachable, gathering-friendly tone from the start. The heart uses jasmine for familiarity and cyclamen for its green, slightly sweet nuance, pairing them with saffron for restraint. The drydown emphasizes sandalwood as the lasting woody impression, supporting it with cedarwood, amber, and vanilla for roundness. Musk acts as the connector, ensuring the base feels cohesive rather than fragmented.
