The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Phlur approached perfumer Clément Gavarry with a specific creative brief that broke from convention. Rather than requesting another warm, musky vanilla interpretation, they asked him to reimagine vanilla through the lens of bright, generous fruit. The collaboration with Gavarry, known for his ability to balance sweetness with restraint, produced a fragrance that feels sun-kissed rather than cozy. The name itself reveals the intent, Vanilla Nectar captures the idea of vanilla as a sweet, flowing abundance rather than a heavy accord. Phlur's signature approach of building fragrances around emotional resonance meant this composition needed to feel personal and layered, something that reveals different facets over time rather than projecting one note uniformly.
The note-philosophy behind Vanilla Nectar treats vanilla as a destination rather than a starting point. By building the composition around bright tropical fruits and lush florals, Phlur creates anticipation for the warm drydown. The pairing rationale connects the sugar and citrus opening to the coconut and floral heart through shared tropical textures, then grounds everything in the vanilla-amber base. This structure ensures wearers experience a complete journey rather than smelling just the opening or just the base. Each note class serves a purpose: fruits create brightness and accessibility, florals add romantic depth, and the base delivers the satisfying warmth that makes the fragrance memorable.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with an immediate burst of tropical sweetness, sugar crystals dissolving against the tongue with pulpy papaya while apricot adds jammy warmth. Tangelo arrives with bright citrus acidity, preventing the opening from cloying. This bright phase lasts roughly fifteen minutes before the florals emerge. Coconut introduces itself subtly first, threading creamy tropical notes through Peach Blossom and Orchid. Jasmine arrives to add depth, its creamy-indolic character enriching the heart's texture. The transition to drydown happens gradually, vanilla emerging as the dominant force while amber adds resinous warmth and cedarwood provides grounding. The full arc from bright citrus to warm vanilla takes approximately two hours, with the drydown lasting several hours beyond.
Cultural impact
Vanilla Nectar arrived as Phlur's latest exploration of bright, fruity vanillas. The composition pairs tropical sweetness, apricot, papaya, tangelo, with warm vanilla. Fruity vanillas that stay close to the skin without being overwhelming have carved out a dedicated niche, and this scent fits neatly within that tradition. The sweet, creamy profile keeps it accessible and distinctive in the genre, drawing attention from those who appreciate the balance between tropical exuberance and approachable warmth.
