The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Clément Gavarry designed Cherry Stem around a single, charged gesture: the act of tying a cherry stem with your tongue. Masterful, effortless, intriguing, those were the words he kept coming back to. Not the cherry itself. The motion. The implication of skill hidden beneath something sweet. He built the fragrance to mirror that progression, starting bold and assertive, softening into something lush, and settling into a drydown that lingers like a secret kept too long. The opening black cherry and orange brandy represent the first moment of contact, bright and attention-grabbing. The heart of jasmine, plum nectar, red freesia, and sugar represents the sweetness that conceals the skill. The drydown of leather, ebony, and caramel represents the lingering warmth of that hidden mastery.
Phlur treats fragrance as emotional territory, and Cherry Stem is no exception. Each scent comes paired with a narrative, a memory, a moment, a feeling, rather than just a note list. For Cherry Stem, the narrative is clear: the charged gesture of skill hidden beneath sweetness. The notes support this story deliberately. Black cherry and orange brandy represent the first moment of contact, bright and assertive. Jasmine, plum nectar, red freesia, and sugar represent the sweetness that conceals the skill, lush and inviting. Leather, ebony, and caramel represent the lingering warmth of that hidden mastery, warm and intimate.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with black cherry and orange brandy, a combination that feels like biting into a candied cherry right after the coating hits. There is no subtlety here, no build-up. The black cherry is dark and syrupy, the orange brandy sharp and spirit-forward. Within 15 minutes, the heart begins to emerge. Jasmine threads through with creamy warmth, plum nectar deepens the fruit into something richer, red freesia adds a crisp floral note, and sugar amplifies everything into a sticky, insistent sweetness. This heart lasts for hours, dominating the mid-section of the fragrance's life. By the second hour, leather begins to emerge in the drydown, giving the scent a textured, worn-in quality. Ebony wood follows, grounding the sweetness with dry, smoky warmth. Caramel lingers at the edges, sweet and edible, ensuring the fragrance stays close to the skin but refuses to disappear entirely. The evolution mirrors the gesture itself: bold, then softening, then settling into something intimate and lasting.
Cultural impact
Cherry Stem arrives at a moment when fruity-leathery compositions are gaining traction in niche and mass fragrance circles alike. The 2025 release taps into the ongoing cultural appreciation for nuanced, narrative-driven scents that do more than smell pleasant. Phlur's approach of pairing each fragrance with an illustrated story and a conceptual identity reflects a broader industry shift toward fragrance as cultural artifact rather than mere personal grooming product. The cherry note itself carries weight in perfumery history, typically associated with youthful or gourmand compositions; Cherry Stem repositions it as something more mature and complex, bridging the gap between casual wear and occasion dressing.
